Jerry Wood Holds Off 15 Year Old Natalie Decker For Win at MIS

There is an old saying that says “Age before beauty.” Whereas that might normally be construed as a sign of respect, in the racing world these days it may be a sign of experience over youth. Yet in this case you still had the age and experience of Jerry Wood narrowly holding off the youthful Natalie Decker to win the Scag Power Equipment Midwest Truck Tour event at the Madison International Speedway.

“This is the only time I have ever hugged another driver in Victory Lane,” said Wood as he hugged Decker as pictures were being taken.

While it may be expected that a veteran like Wood would run up front and score victories, Decker served notice that she would be a contender not only as a rookie of the year candidate, but one who will certainly contend for wins as well.

Dann Barber would quickly take the lead as the green flag flew with Jerry Wood on his bumper. The race would be slowed a lap later when the truck of Scott Kingswan spun in turn four.

The second green flag had the first result as the first, as Barber would jump out ahead of Wood. Wood would pull back alongside barber on lap 4 as Chad Knaus moved in to the third spot and was closing in on the leaders.

John Wood, brother of Jerry, ran side by side with Decker for a few laps before pulling ahead into the fourth spot. Decker than moved to the high side and began her march towards the front. She was able to get around both John Wood and Knaus just as the race hit the crossed flags of the halfway mark.

Meanwhile back up front, Jerry Wood finally cleared Barber for the lead and began to pull away. Barber seemed to fade a bit, allowing Decker to close in. Decker was on Barber’s rear bumper when the yellow would fly again on lap 16. Jason Schuler spun his truck off of turn 2 to bring out the caution. Over in turn four, Decker would get into the back of Barber, spinning him out in the process. Midwest Truck Tour officials decided that the yellow came out before the Decker/Barber incident so both drivers were given their spots back.

The cone would come out for the restart, and both Barber and Decker would take advantage of it. Another restart, and another great jump for Barber, as he launched to the lead again. Jerry Wood would fight back on the inside and pulled even on lap 17. Barber would get loose off of turn two, allowing Wood to clear for the lead. Decker would also take advantage jumping to the inside of Barber for the second spot.

As Decker cleared Barber, Wood stretched out his lead a few truck lengths. In the closing laps Wood would pull away a bit farther and would wind up cruising to a five truck length victory.

Post-Season Racing Competition for ITDS Racing Team

March 15th, 2013

After a big 2012 racing season and a little time off over the winter, the ITDS Racing Team figured it was time for a little friendly racing competition. This time it was the crew members that were behind the wheel! In March, the team got together at ProKart Indoors in Burnsville to hash it out and see who would walk away with bragging rights.

First step on the evening’s agenda: Driver’s Meeting

Once the bragging rights were decided, it was time for dinner! Our fearless leader Bill Collins had a special thank you that was handed out to each member the team. With some help from Nichole, Bill presented each crew member a 60 page photo book filled with photos from the 2012 racing season.

The photo books contained over 300 images of the hard work, learning curve, and great times throughout the season. Here is Matt and Pat (Trick) discussing a picture that brought back a laugh.

The evening was a wonderful way for Bill to say ‘Thank You” to the dedicated crew members who helped out with the #63, 83 and 9 Super Trucks all season long.

Grundy County Speedway – Morris, Illinois July 20th

September 18th, 2012

Bill had trouble in his heat race………….

Darrell in the #9 truck was running on the outside ahead of Bill’s #63 truck .  The pink # 27 truck decided to squeeze in between Darrell and the #88 truck to make it three wide.

The #27 truck gets into Darrell’s #9 truck and turns him sideways.  You can see the white front end of Bill’s #63 truck just coming into the picture.

Bill has no where to go with the #63 truck and ends up running over the #27 truck.  He never lifted…..just kept his foot in it!

Bill’s comment: “Pardon me, coming through”.

Bill had to pull off the track with damage but Nick did a fantastic job of repairing  the front suspension so he could run the feature.  Bill started at the back and finished 8th.  It could have been a lot worse.  The only regret, Bill did not have his in car camera on during the heat race.

Oktoberfest 2011 LaCrosse WI Oct 9th, 2011

October 10th, 2011

Last race of the year was Oktoberfest at LaCrosse County Fairgrounds in West Salem, WI.  This race is a big deal with four full days of racing and hundreds of people camping out for the festivities.

Nick worked his butt off getting both trucks ready for the final race of the year.  Nick and I went down early on Sat morning to practice.  Dan Fredrickson helped out by practicing the #83 truck since Andy was tied up back in the cities.

I was able to run three sessions and Nick made things better and better.  He made a modification to the brakes Sat night that helped.  In the heat races, Andy ran in the first heat, started third row, and worked his way to the front and won the 8 lap heat.  Things were looking good!  I started front row for the second heat with Matt Peterson helping out as my spotter.   I stayed on the inside and ran door handled to door handle with the #2 truck until lost my rear deck lid on the second lap.  The resulting caution moved me to the back of the field since I caused the caution.  Without the deck lid I had no rear downforce on the spoiler and was way too lose.

Darrell Peterson came down to LaCrosse to crew. John Hogdahl was also part of the #63 team for the weekend.

We started the feature with Andy inside 5th row and me gridded right behind him in the 6th row.  Andy and Nick had made a big change in my truck between the hear and feature and I was pumped.  The truck felt good during tire scrub.  When the green fell I stayed right with Andy on the inside groove.  Jerry Wood pushed up in the first turn and Andy got underneath him and I followed.  The truck came off of 4 really well and I was destined to follow Andy through the field.

Then all heck broke loose. The #72 lost control at the end of the straight and tagged the truck next to him. Andy hit someone that spun in front of him, got hit in the right rear which caused him to spin and then I nailed him in the right rear.  The impact took the front end off my truck and killed the radiator.  I was done for the day.  Andy did manage to run a few more laps after we tore some body work off in the pits that was flapping in the breeze but he was done with a busted radiator also.

One bright note, Dan Fredrickson was recruited at the last moment to drive the factory Lefthander Truck and even though he started dead last he won the feature!!!  That was especially cool since Nichole Fredrickson had really pitched in this weekend to help us with prep and logistics so she had something to cheer about in the stands.  Thanks Nichole and Congratulations Dan!

Despite the big wreck, it was fun.  The truck really handled well for that one lap. And even one lap in a good running race car is a thrilling experience.  I am amazed that at 61 years of age I still have the enough ability to drive race cars and realize so much fun doing it.  I can’t wait to get out on the track and give it another run.  My goal is to share the podium with Andy someday.

Andy and Nick are really good at getting these trucks fast.  We are working on plans for next year.  There are several rule changes that need to be looked at but we will come up with something soon so we can get a head start on next seasion.  I am very grateful for all they have done this season.

I need to thank my wife, Melissa, for her support as I pursue my racing antics.  She does not come to the races very often as she is a little uncomfortable watching her husband duke it out with a bunch of crazy circle track drivers.  But she knows I keep safety as a prioity so she is convinced I will always be coming home with a big smile.  Then she humors me while I tell her the detail of every lap.  She is a wonderful woman to put up with my addition to motorsports.

My thanks to everybody that helped this year and I look forward to the first race next year.
