CDL Safety Tips by Bill Collins, Owner of Interstate Truck Driving School

The number one contributing factor in truck crashes is driver distraction.  According to Minnesota Department of Public Safety statistics in 2006 truck drivers were not paying enough attention to their driving in almost 22% of all truck crashes.

The state has recognized how much of a problem driver inattention is and has passed a law making it illegal to engage in text messages while driving.  For over 20 years the trucking industry has used text message systems in trucks for drivers to stay in touch with their dispatchers.  This new Minnesota law prohibts using the messaging system while driving.

Drivers also need to recognize the danger of using a cell phone while driving.  Some states have made it illegal to use cell phones but Minnesota has not at this point in time.  We strongly recommend that drivers avoid using the cell phone while driving.  Professional drivers do their job properly and that means pulling over in a safe area to get into a cell phone conversation.
