Bill Collins wins race in Oklahoma

Bill Collins, the owner of Interstate Truck Driving School, has a passion for driving; Fast on the Track and Safe on the Road.

Bill competes with a 2004 Z06 Corvette in the Sports Car Club of America road races.  He travels all around the country to promote the availability of training at Interstate Truck Driving School to drivers from other states.  Federal Rules allow people to take training and testing in states other than where they live and Interstate has had students from several different states around the U. S.

Bill’s second race of the season was in Hallett Oklahoma on April 8th and 9th.  He has two goals for 2017; first to qualify for an invitation only event in September at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway and he is already well on his way to achieving that goal.  Bill is also attempting to win a Nationwide Points Championship in his class for the Sports Car Club of America Hoosier Super Tour Series.  The race in Hallett is one of 11 events held all across the country that count toward that Championship.  His first race was in Austin Texas a couple of weeks ago.

Bill and his pit crew, Steve Kuehl from Inver Grove Heights, arrived in Hallett Friday morning to take advantage of a test day on the track.  Since Bill had never raced there, he had to learn how to navigate the tight 10 turn 1.8 mile track along with testing some new brake components.  Saturday morning Bill qualified second on the grid for the Saturday afternoon race. At the start of that race, Bill moved up to first place on the second lap.  He and Michael Pettiford from Lousiville Colorado traded position back and forth several times for the next couple of laps.  Finally, Pettiford was able to take advantage as he was using brand new tires and Bill was on a set of used tires so the Interstate Truck Driving School Corvette settled for a 2nd place finish.

On Sunday morning, Bill requalified on the Pole Position with a faster time than anyone else in his class so he started the Sunday afternoon race in 1st place.  At the drop of the green flag, Bill took off and led start to finish using a set of new tires this time and set the fastest time of the weekend.

Bill has raced in the Sports Car Club of America off and on for many years but this was his first victory at this level of competition in 42 years.  The victory was the result of dedicated preparation and focus on the goal of success.  This same process is used by students at Interstate Truck Driving School to achieve success in the trucking industry.  Bill sets an example for his students with his racing accomplishments and then does his best to motivate his students to follow his lead in their quest to become financially secure as professional truck drivers.  Bill also uses driving simulators to prepare for his on track competition just as his students use truck driving simulators at Interstate Truck Driving School to prepare for driving the big rigs.

Students come to Interstate Truck Driving School in South St. Paul MN from all over the country.  Federal Rules allow students from other states to train and test in states they do not live in and Interstate Truck Driving School has set up an online training program that allows people to get most of their training done via the internet before they come to take the practical training on site.  For more information about our training, please visit our website at interstatedriving.com

After his success in Hallett Oklahoma, Bill is leading the Hoosier Super Tour Points Championship in his class. Bill’s next race is out in California the last weekend in April where he hopes to maintain his lead but he has no idea how stiff the competition will be on the west coast.  Check back for updates in May.
