Class A CDL Road Tests

If you want to get your Class A CDL we have several programs designed to provide different levels of training to fit our customers varied level of previous experience.  These programs use trucks with automatic transmissions that are easy to drive. All of the tests are conducted by state examiners.  The goal of these programs is to help you become comfortable with the truck you will be taking your test in and give you only the training you feel you need.

Class A CDL Contractor’s Special:                                                                        $379.00

Includes DOT Drug Screen, 3 Hour Air Brake Basics & Rules of the Road Class, 2 hours in truck training with one of our licensed instructors,  and the CDL road test in Class A truck/trailer combination with automatic transmission.  This program will give you what you need to get ready for the test only if you already know how to back up trailers in a straight line using only your mirrors.  If you cannot back up straight with just the mirrors you will need a longer program.

Economy Class A CDL Program:                                                                           $439.00

Includes DOT Drug Screen, 3 Hour Air Brake Basics & Rules of the Road Class, 2 hours of in truck training with one of our licensed instructors, 2 hours backing practice on our driving range, and the CDL road test in Class A truck/trailer combination with automatic transmission.  This program will give you a couple hours of backing practice to brush up on your backing skills if you have some previous experience.

*Intermediate Class A CDL Program:                                                                   $659.00

DOT Drug Screen, 3 Hour Air Brake Basics & Rules of the Road Class, 4 hours backing practice on our driving range, 4 hours of in truck training with one of our licensed instructors, and the CDL road test in Class A truck/trailer combination with automatic transmission. This program is for drivers that have limited backing experience and need to spend some time to get better at backing with just mirrors in order to pass the test.

* Class A CDL Rookie Program:                                                                  $995.00

DOT Drug Screen, 3 Hour Air Brake Basics & Rules of the Road Class, up to 20 hours backing practice on our driving range, 6 hours of in truck training with one of our licensed instructors, and the CDL road test in Class A truck/trailer combination with automatic transmission.  This program is for drivers that have no experience backing trailers. Some of our customers learn what they need in 10 hours of backing practice but we will give you up to 20 hours of practice if you need it.

The drug screen must be done prior to scheduling your training and test (Don’t confuse the DOT Drug Screen with the DOT Physical – they are two completely different procedures).  The Air Brake-Rules of the Road Class also needs to be done before you take your training.  The Contractor’s Special and road test is completed in one day.  The other programs will have training split into different days with the road test immediately following the last couple hours of training.  You need a Class A permit with Air Brakes for these programs.  Make sure you bring your license and permit with you for each training session.

Your Interstate Truck Driving School instructor will meet you with one of our trucks at the South Metro exam station on the day of your CDL road test.  State rules do not allow training within the exam station so your training on the day of the test will be done in the area around the exam station.  We take care of obtaining the road test appointment from the state for you so don’t worry about that.

These programs include the 3 Hour Air Brake Basics & Rules of the Road Class in order to prepare you for the air brake inspection that is a part of the state CDL road test. We hold that class every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon and every other Wednesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  The 3 hour class can be repeated as often as you like without any additional charge.  This class is VERY important in order for you to perform the inspection on the test properly so you will pass the first time.

Your instructor will also briefly go over the air brake inspection the day of your test.  You will be given a check list to use during the inspection process.  We will cover everything that you will need to know to pass the Road Test but you will be asked to study the material we give you in class in order to be properly prepared to pass the Air Brake Inspection required by the state when you take your Road Test.

You will also receive instruction and practice on the maneuvers required during the test.  Backing, right and left turns, lane changing, and freeway driving will be covered to help you understand what the examiner will be looking for.  The longer programs provide you with more practice and it is your decision how much training you wish to receive before you take the road test.

If you are not sure which program to take please visit our office and we will give you a FREE Evaluation.  One of our instructors will have you get behind the wheel and watch you back up a trailer on our driving range.  We can tell in a very short time how much training you will need.  There is no cost or obligation for the evaluation.

As of July 1st, 2008, there are no restrictions on CDL road tests taken in Minnesota with Automatic Transmissions. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has proposed NEW rules that take effect soon that will place restrictions on tests done in trucks that have auto transmissions. Over 90% of our English speaking customers pass their 1st CDL road test after taking training from us. We have to believe it is easier to pass the test with an automatic than it would be with a stick shift using a clutch. While we fully support the new rules we advise you to act fast if you want to take advantage of the old system that allows a test in an automatic without placing restrictions on your license.

Driver training hourly rate is $110.00 per hour with a two hour minimum.  Students must have passed a DOT drug screen within the last 30 days before any training can be scheduled.  Programs are to be paid on the first day of training to receive program price.  Training can be paid for daily at hourly rate.  Authorization or Purchase Order must be received prior to training in order to bill for services. All invoices must be paid net within 10 business days of receipt.

Prices and curriculum effective 07/01/2008 and are subject to change without notice.
